Dear Austin,
It was a year ago today that we found out we were becoming a family. I was planting flowers and your Daddy was working with Grandpa S. in the garage that warm November afternoon. I remember thinking that something was different. I didn't feel bad, I just felt different. On a whim I decided to take a pregnancy test.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the two pink lines pop up. Could this be true? Was I a Mummy for Halloween and didn't even know it? I immediately started to wonder about you. Where you a boy or a girl? Would you look like me or Daddy? How long would we have to wait to get you? I couldn't wait to share my new secret with your Daddy. After Grandpa left, I took him (it was at this point, the point where he crossed the bathroom threshold that he became a Daddy) in the bathroom and showed him the test. "What does that mean?" he asked. "Uhm, I think we're having a baby!" Then he told me I couldn't tell anyone! What?! I couldn't share the most exciting news in my life?? But I knew he was right. I knew we had to make sure you were going to be a strong little baby before we started spreading the news. After a few days and a few doctor visits later...we decided it was safe to start shouting it from the mountain tops: We're having a baby!
Those first few days, even weeks, were filled with excitement, joy, and wonder. (And gifts, yes, your family started buying stuff while you still had a tail!) There was a lot I didn't know that day. I didn't know that there was going to be a lot of trying times during pregnancy, I didn't know that I'd have to get up at 4:45 every morning when I wet back to work, and I didn't know that two tiny little pink lines could lead to more love then we'd ever known. The rest of the story can be told another day. I just wanted to make sure you know how excited we were the day we found out we were becoming a family of three.
