The Kiefers Visit Santa

We took Austin to visit Santa a few days after Thanksgiving. The Tuesday after Thanksgiving turns out to be the perfect time! We were the only ones there!

I was a little nervous about how Austin would do this year. Last year he was too young to even know what was going on. This year he's not a fan of any stranger, much less one in a bright red suit.

I held out hope when I saw how happy was before we went in!
Like I said, we were the only ones there, so we had minimal warm-up time. He screamed, like getting-a-shot screamed, the second we sat him down. They were able to work with him a little bit since there wasn't a line. We played catch. Santa tried to read to him. They danced. We sang everything from Rudolph to Bob The Builder....

Eventually we all got in the shot and 2009 because "the year we took a family Santa photo!"

17 Months Old!

Austin, at 17 months...

You have more teeth. We're not sure how many because you never let us get a good look!

You say Two after we say One.You love blowing kisses. There's also a good chance you say something like "love you" when you leave each morning.

You say door (over and over again) when you want to go outside.

You share your mother's love of chocolate. You're long enough to kick the back of the passenger seat in the car.

You look a lot like your Pa, but every once in awhile you shoot your Mama a look and you're "all Daddy."You've added "Neigh Neigh," "cock-a-doodle-do" and "sisss" to your list of animal sounds

You lick your lips when we ask you if you like Strawberries.

You're walking!!Your Mama is having a harder and harder time keeping up with your lists each month!

You're still the best Christmas gift ever!!Love you, baby boy!

Christmastime Around The House

Decorating the house for Christmas is a little different now that we have a 17-month-old running around. I had to get a little creative with what I put out, and where I put it. Nothing breakable can be within reach of a 30+ inch toddler! We hope you enjoy your tour...

A Note From Austin: The Christmas Tree

My friends, Isabella and Adali, get to talk on their blogs all the time. I told Mama that it was about time she let me take over. I decided I'm going to use my little bit of time to tell you about the Christmas Tree.

I got really excited when we started putting up the tree. A new toy, right? WRONG! They won't even let me touch it! They tell me it's hot, but I know it's not because I touch it ALL the time when they aren't looking. Who do they think they're messing with?

Anyway, here were are putting the tree up. I'm in my jammies and my Mama is in her work uniform. (Don't let her kid you. She do NOT get ready every morning!)
I had to make sure my Mama had this thing tight. I did not want this tree falling on me during Wonder Pets.
Look! Here she is already telling me to get out! It doesn't even have "hot" things on it yet!
Putting up the tree is for the birds! I'd rather play with the box!
So here's the final product. At least this is what it looked like before I started to work my magic. The hot things (I think my parents call them ornaments), a.k.a the balls, are now kind of in the middle of the tree. Apparently they get moved higher the braver I get.
I hope you enjoyed our tree and my post. Maybe Mama will let me do this more often!

Love, Austin Jay Kiefer

Little Reader

It isn't uncommon to find Austin reading to himself. He really gets into telling his own version of the story.

St. Nick's Day

So what is St. Nick's Day?

To some it's just another day for spoiled children, but to others...

While feasts of Saint Nicholas are not observed nationally, cities with strong German influences like Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and St. Louis celebrate St. Nick's Day on a scale similar to the German custom.[7] On December 5, the Eve of St. Nicholas Day, each child puts one empty shoe outside their bedroom door or on a staircase before they go to sleep. The following morning of December 6, the children awake to find that St. Nick has filled their footwear with candy and small presents (if the children have been good) or coal (if not). For these children, the relationship between St. Nick and Santa Claus is not clearly defined, although St. Nick is usually explained to be a helper of Santa. The tradition of St. Nick's Day is firmly established in the Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Cleveland and St. Louis communities, with parents often continuing to observe the day with their adult children. Widespread adoption of observing the tradition has spread among the German, Polish, Belgian and Dutch communities throughout Wisconsin, and is carried out through modern times. (Wikipedia)

Either way, we enjoy celebrating it! This year, St. Nick just happened to visit when Daddy and Austin took a trip to town.
He once again went a little over board. Maybe he shops like mama -- a little early so he ends up forgetting what he has. Or maybe he felt guilty that Mama had to leave for Chicago the next day...
Austin was excited to find his gifts under his tree and stocking.Ooooh! Christmas Books!
The Little People Nativity is so cute! He loves making it play Away In A Manger.I loved the Christmas PJs St. Nick had picked out. Austin, however, has already hit the "yuck! clothes!" stage!
And then, just like that, it was all over!
Later that day we found the perfect spot for his new Nativity.
We love St. Nick!

A Lonely Night In Chi Town

Austin,

Traveling for work takes on a whole new meaning now that I have you. I've always hated to be away from your Dad but being away from you is 10 times worse! I hate that I can't even explain to you where I'm going, why I'm going and when I'll be home.
I know that Nana is taking excellent care of you but I still worry about you! I guess that's just what mamas do! I'd bring this pickle home for you if I could!
Tomorrow night can't get here soon enough! See you soon, baby boy!

Thanksgiving '09

We have so much to be thankful for this year...
We started off Thanksgiving with lunch with the Kiefer's. We had to take another four generations picture this year...
It was off to Nana and Pa's after a fun afternoon with Grandma and Grandpa Kiefer.
And as if we didn't have enough to be thankful for, Santa showed up for an early St. Nick's Day!
We ended the Thanksgiving week with Nana's side of the family.Austin loved playing with his big cousins! Our hearts and bellies were definitely full this year!
